The structural integrity of our homes and the health and safety of all inside are basic necessities of life. However, with age and wear and tear, our homes eventually deteriorate and need renovation and construction services. From installing new appliances, new hardware fittings, and new lighting fixtures to reparation works like repainting, reinstalling windows, refacing cabinets, replacing flooring, and any outdated systems, renovation intends to revive a space or a property.

All this said, in today’s world of online forums and scattered advice, misconceptions about construction and renovation services are rampant and often misleading. To help you steer clear of these falsehoods, Asbestos Solutions Inc. has debunked some of the most widely believed myths about renovation and construction projects.

Myth 1: Saving drywall or other material saves money

This myth exists as customers and contractors feel they are saving time and money by not removing materials. This line of thinking is flawed due to the fact that the time and energy the trades spend working with existing materials, fishing wires and plumbing is often higher than it would have been to replace the old with new. Additionally, the quality of the finished product also suffers.

Myth 2: Blowing new insulation on top of vermiculite is alright

It is never a good idea to blow new insulation on top of vermiculite. Vermiculite does not contain asbestos, but it is contaminated with asbestos. By blowing insulation on top, you disturb the asbestos fibers, making them airborne. This contaminates the home or office with asbestos, rendering the building unsafe to inhabit. If you want to add insulation to the attic, the vermiculate must be abated prior to this step.

Myth 3: You can tell if asbestos is present by just looking

Once again, this is a misconception and overestimation of our abilities. Asbestos is a microscopic fiber that is often invisible to the naked eye. The only way to know for sure if asbestos is present is to take proper samples and have them analyzed by a lab.
